Program Philosophy

More than just a quick fix

Weight gain is a gradual process that occurs over many months or years. Obesity often involves a combination of factors such as physiological or psychological conditions, environmental factors, genetics, and even social pressures. That's why fad diets and crash exercise programs usually don't help in the long run.

At Kaiser Permanente, your health is our cause. We have designed a medically-supervised weight management program at our weight loss clinic in Elk Grove, CA, and surrounding communities to help you improve your health-now, and for years to come.

Our program has four basic elements:

  • Medical supervision to ensure your safety
  • Meal replacements to reduce your weight and improve your overall health
  • Behavioral skills to change your lifestyle and sustain your weight loss over time
  • Physical activity to keep the weight off

Here's how we can help

Making healthy choices every day

Program PhilosophyThe ability to make healthy choices on a daily, ongoing basis takes more than knowing that an apple is a better snack choice than a cookie. It's a learned skill. We can give you the tools you need to build healthy daily habits and deal with challenging situations in a positive way so you're more likely to succeed in keeping weight off. Our program curriculum is based on the principles of behavioral science. We'll work with you on skills such as setting realistic goals, designing action plans, self-monitoring, and problem solving.

It's hard to make ongoing changes to your lifestyle when you don't see the rewards of weight loss, so while you're learning new skills and forging better health habits, you'll also use OPTIFAST® and other low-calorie meal replacements to help take weight off rapidly and safely. Seeing results can keep you motivated while you begin to make long-term diet and physical activity changes.

Maintaining your new weight

Our program is based on the idea that you need to make long-term changes to your diet and activity level in order to maintain a healthy weight. The skills you'll develop in the first 30 weeks of the program will help you create healthy habits that will last a lifetime, and we've structured the program to support you on an ongoing basis.

Our program is designed to last longer than most available meal replacement programs, so your chance of learning and applying your new skills is better than with other shorter-term programs. You will have the opportunity to participate in weekly group sessions for 82 weeks, where you can discuss your progress, get support from others, and keep on track with your goals. Managing setbacks

Nobody's perfect, and we don't expect you to be. If you do have a setback, we're ready to help you get back on track quickly. We are committed to your long-term success, and we will work with you to keep you on a healthy path. Your facilitator and weight management group can support you through small lapses and major setbacks.

Improving your overall health and lifestyle

Sure, it feels great to slide on those "goal" jeans or notice how great your reflection is looking lately, but the most important reason for losing weight is to improve your health. The Medical Weight Management Program can help you:

  • Reduce your weight
  • Lower your risk of heart disease
  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Lower your cholesterol and blood glucose levels
  • Manage diabetes
  • Relieve joint pain from excess weight

Good health also improves your quality of life. You'll have more energy to play with your kids and grandkids, hit the town with your partner, or have fun with your friends. You may be able to sit more comfortably in an armchair or airplane seat, go on a hike, and feel better about the way you look.
